The West India Quay side of the Wharf tends to be one of the go-to locations for after-work drinks, so it was high time to explore what the area offers in terms of lunches. Rum & Sugar makes me think of Jamaica and pirates for some odd reason (admittedly, the rum is probably the culprit there, but sugar itself used to be one of the most valuable goods pirates could get their hands on).

Rum & Sugar has quite an impressively large selection of rum (not appropriate for lunch consumption perhaps), but it was also shockingly empty for lunch time in the wharf. Most places tend to be buzzing and busy, so it was rather refreshing actually to find a place where we could have a nice chat and not wait for a table. The wooden interior, reduced light, and the architecture of the place did make you feel like a stowaway – without the rats or the smell of urine so it was all fun and games!
I was pleasantly surprised by the food at Rum & Sugar (perhaps by virtue of low expectations for all things Canary Wharf). The restaurant gave us some lovely bread whilst we were making up our mind, soft and warm, with a great texture to it. The beef burger was quite decent – with a good mix of veggies such as lettuce and tomato which gave the dish a crunchy and fresh texture. The chips were well cooked, crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. Decent lunch but nothing that rocked by boat too hard.
