South Kensington is not foreign to French delicatessens, with La Patisserie des Reves just around the corner. It is rather fitting with the area, which has a certain appeal towards sophistication and excess. Maitre Choux is eclair heaven – but don’t expect them to be incredibly affordable.

The space is incredibly simple and clearly geared more towards taking the eclairs to go (there is some chouquettes as well but the place is predominantly eclairs). Each one goes for around 5£ a pop, which is, in all honesty, a bit on the pricey side. Certainly enough, this is most likely caused by the sheer fact the patisserie is in South Kensington where rent is just through the roof.

The eclairs are delicious – the batter is soft and delicate, the filling is light and there is quite an extensive diversity when it comes to flavours and what you can pick out. The Hazelnut & Milk Chocolate Treasure (the golden one) was one of the best, an omage to the classic eclair with a bit more glitz and glamour put into it. Avantgarde eclairs is what Maitre Choux offers, a certain modern take on the classic dessert – and avantgarde has never been synonymous with cheap.
